…and for some more context on the project:
Some of you have been loyal subscribers and supporters of this newsletter since its inception. Some of you have been around even before then. Not sure how many of you were knowledgeable about my existence in spring of 2020 so we’re gonna take a trip down memory lane. I like others was in college in my sophomore year spring semester when the world shut down and was sent back to Glenville, NY. I was home for a little bit but in the back some Instagram DMs scheming a plan to get out. By May, I was on a plane to Colorado to sublet some random Facebook Marketplace person’s room for the summer. I had even gotten scammed on a Craigslist listing and lost $1200 in the process. Anyways that’s beside the point. I was in Colorado to take photos of the godly pro runners who lived there, and make some friends along the way.
I showed up to Tinman Elite practice the first day and was geeked. I had done it. I was in Colorado taking photos of pro runners. Every day I was just stoked to have the opportunity to be there, and was trying to take advantage of it to the max. Fast forward to the end of the summer, I had really made myself valuable around Colorado, and it paid off. I had gotten a lot better at photography (and folding t-shirts) and classes were still online. I decided to stay out there. By this point I felt like I was one of the guys on the team.
By Spring 2021, I had completed a year in Colorado, made countless friends, shot hundreds of thousands of photos, learned to play beer die, watched Emily Maye shoot an Adidas campaign, and my parting gift was the opportunity to shoot my own adidas campaign with Drew for the Boston 10. By August I had to fly back to New York to finish my senior year and graduate from college. But in those 457 days I learned a lot, got a lot more confident in myself, made some life long friends, became a much better photographer, and became a someone who could be a serviceable and have a ready to go career in the spring when I graduated.
Tinman Elite means a lot to me, and hopefully this book shows that. It's the first time that I have collaborated with other photographers on a project like this. Ben, Kevin, Max and I were all interns with the team at some point. We all overlapped in our stays in Boulder. I now own a company alongside Kevin and Max, and we have closely collaborated with Ben over the years. They are some of my closest friends. What a awesome thing for all of us to pour our creative energy into. It’s the first time I have worked on a project with a body of work this large. There were over 35000 images I put onto a hard drive just from my backlog alone. I started combing through photos quite casually last May, and have just finally been putting the final touches on it.
This book is a culmination of all of our experiences documenting the team. From training to championships, to team training camps and hanging out in Boulder. A special body of work with a special group of people.
